TRANSCRIPT

STEVE (narrating): 10:00 AM, I finish typing, I finish reminiscing, and I finish another dose.

I put everything together and seal the envelopes. They’re plump envelopes. Hard copies of all those files take up a lot of space. It’s worth every cent of stationery, though, because I know that I have the holy grail of stories here.

It’s a paper trail. To my knowledge, it is the largest and most well-cited paper trail of its kind. It’s proof of major wrong-doings, the kind of stuff that could ruin the careers of major politicians and destroy the fortunes of powerful CEOs, the kind of proof that well-dressed men with numbers instead of names come and kill you for even thinking about reading.

It all started about a month ago when I started reading through some military spending reports that the US government was recently forced to release under the Freedom of Information Act. I was doing research for an opinion piece about our bloated military-industrial complex. When I went over some numbers, I noticed that some things didn’t add up. So I dug a little deeper. Then I did a little snooping. Then I broke a couple of laws.

Anyway, most of the stuff I found is all available to the public and can be easily verified. Anyone could have found it, all it took was the piecing together of dissociated knowledge, but most people wouldn’t be willing to do the legwork. They encourage us to be complacent.
