The Kalem Society

TRANSCRIPT
GEORGE (narrating): I wish I could make Steve understand the stakes here – but even if he knew, he'd say it doesn't justify the secrecy or the lies. I know he's wrong. There are some secrets people are better off not knowing. They don't understand - cannot understand - how the lie keeps them alive.
The last time I saw Steve, I was chasing one of my dreams.
STEVE: I know you're there. ...well? Come on out.
GEORGE: How?
STEVE: Whoa, it worked!
SFX: SLAM
GEORGE: How did you know I was here?
GEORGE (thinking): If Steve was psychic, I would have sensed him using his power.
STEVE: Honestly? I didn't. That's just what I say every time I walk into an empty room alone. First time it's paid off.
GEORGE (narrating): I would have read his mind, but I avoided doing that to Steve. In those days I was too weak to reliably hide my presence in someone's mind, and Steve isn't the sort to ignore a creepy feeling.
STEVE: So what are you working on?
GEORGE: Research.
GEORGE (narrating): I was meditating.
STEVE: In the dark?
GEORGE: I had light from the window when I started. Guess I didn't notice.
STEVE: Oh sure, like boiling a frog. Speaking of which, a certain evil corporation might be responsible for all the dead frogs in our swamps lately.
GEORGE: Not sure which company it was that time. He actually said “a certain evil corporation.”
STEVE: They're tearing down some historical landmarks for a new factory. I dropped by to pick up some of my notes before I go interview the wrecking crew about how they feel about being forced to work for fascist corporacrat pigs.
