TRANSCRIPT

9:25 AM, I wipe the sweat from my forehead and take another dose.

I do a quick search of my office. When I was a kid I used to search my room every night before I went to sleep. First, I would check the closet for alien seed pods, just incase body-snatchers had replaced my parents, and then I would poke around under my bed looking for the boogeyman. Now I’m sure it was a dream, but I could swear I remember finding him there once. I’m not a kid anymore, but I guess I’m still searching for the boogeyman.

A few weeks ago I would have just been looking for hidden cameras or recording devices, now-a-days I have to make sure there isn’t an assassin waiting for me in the coat closet.

Once the office is clear I sit down at my desk and start going through my files. I’m gathering them together, checking that no one has tampered with them; organizing the evidence I’ve collected, making copies, sorting them into manila envelopes, addressing them. I’m planning on taking a big risk today, so I need to know that if anything happens, the right people will know what I know.

I hesitate before I turn on my computer. I want to type up and print an explanatory note to go with the envelopes, summarizing what I’ve learned, letting people know what I’ve been through these past few weeks. I’ve sweat blood for this story. I’ve dodged bullets. I just have to fire up the desktop, it’s no big deal. But what if They put a bomb in there? What if it explodes when I turn it on? I’ve seen plenty of movies where they make it look easy, but I don’t know how to defuse a bomb. “It’s always the red wire.” Yeah right, like it could be that simple in real life. I bet that’s just what They want me to think. It’s probably rigged to explode the second I open the panel.
