TRANSCRIPT

Monday, 8:00 AM, I enter the drug store. The florescent lights sting my eyes – I squint and they water. They take longer to adjust than they should because I haven’t slept for days. I can’t take the risk.

Slowly, cautiously, hesitantly, I approach the counter. I’m trying to look casual, but that’s hard to pull off when there’s a price on your head. The clerk smiles at me and I wonder for a moment if he might be the one They have sent. No, I’ve seen him here before, I think. I’m pretty good with faces.

I hand him the crumpled slip of paper with my prescription on it. I’m sick and I’ve been getting sicker every day. I think They might be trying to poison me. I don’t see why They don’t get it over with. They must be poisoning me just a little each day, so it looks like an accident, but why not just do it all at once? It would be so easy for Them to cover it up. Doesn’t matter. I don’t doubt that They are poisoning me. I can’t afford to. The real question is how are They getting it to me?

Finally the clerk comes back with my meds and hands them down to me. His side of the counter is so much higher than ours. We have to reach up to get our medicines, like we’re reaching up to God and He’s doling it out as He sees fit, so high and mighty. Just another one of those little ways that They try to make us keep feeling small and weak.
