The Kalem Society

The image accompanying today's installment is actually something I doodled in one of my sketchbooks about six years ago. Of course, I added Steve recently. Originally there was a security guard standing there. I came across it while cleaning out some things and I decided that I had to fit it into the story at some point because it just seemed to belong somehow. It seems to fit here, since Steve imagines he's uncovered something huge and sinister. Has he really? We'll have to wait and find out.

TRANSCRIPT

What I found seems small and boring at first, just some misappropriated funds. Criminal? Certainly. Reprehensible? I think so. Surprising? Not really. One expects a certain amount of corruption to be unavoidable in any large bureaucracy. The thing is, I found enough funds unaccounted for to form a whole new baby bureaucracy.

I started investigating and eventually determined that was pretty much what it was. The United States military budget includes funding for an entire bureau that they decided not to tell anyone about. But it gets better.

This organization has close ties to other organizations all over the world, ranging from small companies, to large companies, to private clubs and charitable organizations, to really old fraternal orders, to organizations that are likewise secretly funded by the local government and not supposed to exist. And most of these turned out to be pretty flimsy front organizations under close scrutiny. It’s an actual, honest to God, international conspiracy. It’s a genuine secret society – one which I can actually prove exists.

I don’t know what they call themselves, and I don’t know what they do, or what their long term goals might be, but right now it looks like they have a headquarters in every country on Earth and maybe even one in every major city. I’ve uncovered nearly 70 so far. All together, they’re at least the size of Interpol, with several times the funding.

I know I’m on the verge of something huge. It could be that I’ve uncovered the first stirrings of the New World Order. This might be the precursor to a single world government. I still don’t know what they actually do, but if they’re that big and powerful and they don’t want anyone to know they exist, then they must be doing all kinds of illegal stuff. I’m talking unethical experimentation, embezzlement of billions of dollars, treason, rigging elections, mass murder, crimes against humanity – the sky’s the limit!
